Research Directions & Interests
RDI’s wider portfolio reflects four university research priorities. Prof. Ahmed El-Yazbi’s group and collaborators provide a biomedical research strand within that broader portfolio, rather than representing all RDI disciplines.
RDI’s wider research portfolio
Health & Biomedical Sciences. Drug discovery, biomedical engineering and public health.
Engineering & Technology. Smart manufacturing, robotics and artificial intelligence.
Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence. Data science, cybersecurity, machine learning and computational modelling.
Environment & Sustainable Development. Water resource management, green architecture and climate-change mitigation.

The following interests are synthesized from the selected publications in the existing two-year evidence register.
Cardiometabolic disease and organ complications. Metabolic stress, adipose dysfunction and inflammation linking cardiovascular, renal and hepatic complications; GSK-3β/WNT signalling and multi-target interventions. P01, P04, P06.
Neuroinflammation, neurovascular function and cognition. Diabetes-associated cognitive impairment, astrocyte and GPCR signalling, neurovascular coupling, mitochondrial and synaptic changes, and complement-related mechanisms including ficolin-3. P02, P03, P09, P11.
Drug repurposing and multi-target drug discovery. SGLT2/DPP-4 inhibitor repurposing and candidate molecules targeting PPARγ, COX-2, carbonic anhydrases or 15-LOX, integrating medicinal chemistry, assays, modelling and preclinical pharmacokinetics. P04, P06, P09.
Proteomics, metabolomics and computational discovery. Serum and tissue molecular profiling, lipidomics, pathway analysis, target prediction and docking to investigate metabolism, inflammation, cognition and drug action. P02, P07, P09, P11.
Environmental toxicology and metabolic susceptibility. Organophosphate exposure, endocannabinoid signalling and neuroinflammation, including mitochondrial and synaptic changes in pre-diabetes. P10, P11.
Cancer pharmacology. Candidate anticancer compounds, including furanone-based Hsp90 inhibitors, and preclinical antitumor and pharmacokinetic investigation. P08.
Nutrition and bioactive peptides. Health implications of fermented-milk protein peptides and review-level consideration of artificial-intelligence integration. P05.
These are research interests, not an approved list of currently funded projects. The evidence includes observational, preclinical and review work; it does not establish clinical efficacy. P05 and P08 support topic-level descriptions only.
