Professor Dr. Essam Elkordi, President of Alamein International University (AIU), participated in the Euro-Mediterranean Higher Education, Research and Innovation Conference (EM-HERI 2026), held under the theme “Sustainability, Open Science, and Green Jobs.” The conference took place at the headquarters of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in Tunis, Tunisia, on June 23, 2026, followed by the 18th General Assembly of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) on June 24, 2026.

The conference is regarded as one of the region’s leading events dedicated to advancing higher education, scientific research, and innovation across the Mediterranean region. It was jointly organized by the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), and the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed).

The event brought together a distinguished group of policymakers, public authorities, university leaders, academic institution representatives, researchers, and delegates from international and regional organizations, as well as representatives from industry and employers. High-level sessions also featured representatives from the European Commission, the Union for the Mediterranean, and members of the European Parliament.

Conference sessions addressed a range of strategic issues related to the future of higher education, research, and innovation in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration among higher education and research institutions, exploring policy frameworks and institutional responses to sustainability and climate change challenges, and promoting the adoption of the Open Science concept as a key driver of quality, inclusiveness, and scientific impact.

The discussions also highlighted the growing role of universities and research institutions in preparing human capital and equipping graduates with the green skills required for future jobs. In addition, participants reviewed the latest scientific research outcomes and best practices, while exploring mechanisms for building partnerships and strengthening cooperation networks among academic and research institutions and stakeholders from both shores of the Mediterranean.

On the sidelines of the conference, Professor Dr. Essam Elkordi participated in the 18th General Assembly of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), which discussed a number of topics related to enhancing cooperation among partner universities and advancing joint academic and research initiatives that support the objectives of higher education, research, and innovation throughout the Euro-Mediterranean region.
